Richmond South Centre MLA Linda Reid is celebrating today’s decision to allow members to attend to the needs of an infant while carrying out their duties in the Legislature.
Reid was proud to support Motion 5: Amendment to Standing Orders to Allow Infants, and notes the progress that has been made since 2000 when she welcomed her daughter Olivia to the world.
“We didn’t have maternity leave. We were back here when my daughter was five days old,” says Reid.
She notes another change that occurred over the years. “We rarely sit in September, which is the kindest to families. Parents want to be at home, getting their children established at school.”
Reid received a standing ovation from all members of the House for leading the charge to make the Legislature a family-friendly place that includes maternity benefits, change tables in the washrooms, and scheduled Legislative sittings and hours so families could make a plan about returning to Victoria.
